Job Description

THE TEAM

The highly specialised marine industry demands total commitment, expertise and focus from its advisers to resolve both litigious and non-litigious issues. With a wealth of experience in advising on all aspects of international marine law, this marine, trade and energy practice enjoys an unrivalled reputation in its field.

The global team works closely with marine surveyors, investigators and loss adjusters to provide a comprehensive legal service to clients who range from ship and yacht owners, charterers, underwriters, P&I clubs, commodities end-users and trade associations to port operators, banks and other financial institutions.

THE ROLE

The successful candidate will have dry shipping experience including: some experience in time and voyage charterparties, bills of lading and the carriage of goods by sea, and international sales agreements.

A good knowledge of the Arbitration Act and trade and shipping body arbitration rules (including powers/duties and appeals) is essential.

This role will also include some UK/overseas litigation, so a good knowledge of the procedures and requirements is required. There will also be some non-marine insurance work; a wider interest in insurance and litigation would be very useful as a consequence.

THE PERSON

* 3-5PQE UK qualified shipping solicitor

* Experience of some or most of the following:

  • some experience in time and voyage charterparties;
  • bills of lading and the carriage of goods by sea;
  • international sales agreements; shipping finance in trade (eg. letters of credit, guarantees etc);
  • commodities;
  • ship arrest;
  • some post casualty work;
  • demurrage claims;
  • detention claims;
  • cancelling claims;
  • contamination claims in dry and wet bulk cargo;
  • container claims;
  • liquefaction claims;
  • cargo claims generally;
  • some previous exposure to salvage and general average matters and issues;
  • jurisdiction issues;
  • and marine insurance knowledge.
