Job Description


A leading University is offering a role within the Office of the General Counsel.


As Legal Counsel - Commercial you will be responsible for providing advice on legal matters including: drafting and negotiating complex agreements, managing litigation and dispute resolution processes and advising on intellectual property issues, research agreements, charity matters, governance issues, student complaints and appeals, research ethics and the legal aspect of funding agreements.

You will be responsible for providing a flexible resource over a wide variety of areas including:

Commercial contracts including purchase of a broad range of goods and/or services, Framework Agreements (including MSAs) and outsourcing arrangements;

Research related matters, including collaboration agreements, grant agreements and funding agreements;

IT related contracts, including SaaS, hardware, software and professional services purchasing;

Intellectual Property, including licensing of IP, enforcement of IP and IP policy matters;

Corporate activity, such as joint ventures;

Risk and compliance


A solicitor or barrister with 4pqe+ gained at a leading law firm or equivalent in-house role, you should have strong knowledge of contract law and advising on/negotiating a range of contracts and issues.

You will have experience operating and influencing at senior management and board level, and of dealing with a range of legal issues on a self-standing basis.

You will have good commercial acumen gained from the public or private and show evidence of the appreciation of the dynamics of higher education and an empathy with academic endeavour without necessarily having worked in the HE sector.
